The adoption debate is over. The 2025 State of AI in the Church survey, run by Exponential's AI NEXT with ChurchTechToday and AIforChurchLeaders, found that 91% of church leaders support using AI in ministry, 61% use it weekly or daily, and 64% of pastors already lean on it for sermon prep. The gap that should worry you is the other number: 73% of ministries had no AI policy at all, and only 6% had a written one. So the problem in 2026 is not whether your church uses AI. It is that most churches use it everywhere without ever deciding, in writing, where it stops. 4. Midjourney V8.1 — artistic quality

Midjourney made V8.1 the default in June 2026, with faster renders and native HD 2K images without a separate upscale step. It is still the tool to reach for when you want something that looks genuinely beautiful rather than merely correct.

Pricing: subscription only, no real free tier. Church use: worship-night backdrops, atmospheric series art, and print pieces where the look has to carry the room.

5. Recraft — vector art and patterns

Recraft remains the best pick when you need true vector output: logos, icons, seamless patterns, and graphics that stay sharp from a phone screen to a printed banner. Most image models give you a flat raster; Recraft gives you something you can scale and edit.

10. Kling 3.0

MiniMax Hailuo is known for expressive character motion and is a strong, low-cost option for short clips.

A note on OpenAI Sora: the standalone Sora app was shut down in 2026 and its video API is being retired, with the technology folded into ChatGPT instead. If you used Sora, your path now runs through ChatGPT and the tools above.

Music and audio

12. Suno v5.5 — original music

Suno v5.5 (early 2026) writes full, studio-quality songs from a text description, now with custom voice options and tracks past eight minutes. It is the easiest way to get original, copyright-clean music for a video or a service element.

Four principles to hold the line

1. AI assists. It never does pastoral care. In 2023 the Southern Baptist Convention became the first major denomination to pass a resolution on AI, calling for "the utmost care and discernment" and grounding human dignity in people being made in God's image rather than in what they produce. Use AI for admin and for making things. Keep it out of confession, prayer counseling, and discipleship. A model can assemble words about grief; it has never lost anyone.

2. Be honest about where you use it. AI-made graphics on the church Instagram need no disclaimer. A "letter from the pastor" the pastor never wrote is a different matter. The survey found congregants' top worry is exactly this, AI quietly replacing a human they thought they were hearing from. Do not give them a reason to wonder.

3. Spend the saved time on people, not on payroll cuts. The whole case for these tools is that they hand a few hours back to your team. Put those hours into the visit, the follow-up, the conversation after the service.
