Texas Mandated Bible Reading in Schools. I'm a Christian, and I'm Worried.

Mandating Bible reading in public schools sounds like a victory for Christians, but I believe it could do more harm than good for the Gospel.
News broke this week that Texas has approved a list of required readings for public schools that includes biblical stories and excerpts , set to take effect in 2030 . My first reaction to this news wasn't celebration. It was a deep sense of concern.
On the surface, it seems like a win. The Bible, a foundational text of Western civilization, back in schools. What could be wrong with that? My fear is that we’re asking the state to do the job of the family and the Church, and the result will be a generation of students inoculated against the very Word we want them to love.
The Gospel is an invitation, not a curriculum
The heart of the Christian faith is a voluntary response to the grace of God. Jesus didn't lobby Caesar to pass laws requiring Torah study. He walked up to fishermen and tax collectors and said, "Follow me." It was an invitation to a relationship, one that would reorder their entire lives.
The Great Commission is not to make sure every citizen has a passing familiarity with the story of David and Goliath. It is to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them... teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19-20). Discipleship is a deep, relational, Spirit-led process. It is not a line item in a civics curriculum.
When we legislate the reading of Scripture, we risk transforming it from a life-giving wellspring of truth into just another boring text assigned by a teacher who may or may not be a believer, and who is almost certainly not equipped to handle its profound spiritual claims.
The strongest counter-argument
Now, I know the argument on the other side, and I feel its pull. It goes something like this: "Any exposure to the Bible is better than none. A seed might be planted! At least kids will learn about its literary and historical importance."
I get it. The intentions are sincere. Many faithful Christians see this as reclaiming moral ground in a culture that feels increasingly hostile to our faith. And yes, the Bible is a literary masterpiece and a historical cornerstone. But context is everything.
Imagine a ninth grader being assigned a reading from the book of Joshua. Without a theological framework, how is a teacher supposed to explain the conquest of Canaan? In the hands of an untrained, potentially unbelieving educator, it can easily be presented as a justification for genocide, confirming every negative stereotype a skeptical student might hold about God.
Instead of planting a seed of faith, we may be planting a seed of cynicism.
Where God places the responsibility
The Bible is not silent on how its truths should be passed down. It places that sacred duty squarely on the family and the faith community. Look at God's instruction to Israel:
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

This is a vision of constant, life-on-life discipleship. It’s a parent’s job. It’s a church’s job. It is not the job of a government-funded school system.
The early church turned the world upside down not through political power, but through the compelling witness of believers whose lives were radically changed by the Gospel. They didn't need the Roman Senate's endorsement.
The likely, unintended consequences
I worry that this mandate will lead to several negative outcomes:
It will trivialize Scripture. When the Bible is presented alongside Homer and Shakespeare as just another great book, it loses its unique authority as the inspired Word of God.It will create resentment. Forcing students of other faiths, or no faith, to read the Bible is a surefire way to build animosity toward it. Think back to the book you were forced to read in high school that you ended up hating. Do we want that for the Bible?It will give Christians a false sense of victory. We might check the box on a political scorecard while neglecting the harder, more important work of personal evangelism and discipleship.

It’s us, the followers of Christ, taking our own spiritual growth seriously. We must equip ourselves to be the primary teachers of our children and the primary witnesses to our neighbors. The conversation around AI and the future of Christian education is fascinating because it focuses on tools that can help us do this work, not outsource it.
