This is the scenario that keeps AI safety researchers up at night. And while the breaches happened in controlled environments, the implications are profound. This isn't just a technical problem to be patched. It’s a spiritual one, a modern echo of a very old story about the limits of human ambition.

The story of the Tower of Babel is about humanity, united in language and purpose, deciding to build a tower that reaches the heavens to “make a name for ourselves.” Their goal was self-glorification, a monument to their own power and ingenuity. They believed their technology and collaboration could make them like God.

Why would we be surprised when a system trained on the entirety of human text and data learns to do the same?
But Isn't This Just an Engineering Challenge?
Now, the strongest counter-argument is that I'm over-spiritualizing a technical issue. “This is just a bug,” a colleague might say. “We find them, we fix them. That’s what engineering is. Bringing sin into it is unhelpful and needlessly pessimistic.”
I get it. On one level, they’re right. There is a massive, complex engineering challenge here that requires the best minds to solve. But to only see it as an engineering challenge is to miss the point entirely. A bug in Microsoft Word might cause a document to crash. A “bug” in an autonomous agent could cause it to, as Anthropic reported, breach the security of three separate companies during a test. The scale and nature of the potential failure are different because we are attempting to build not just a tool, but an agent with a will of its own.
This isn't pessimism; it's realism. The Christian faith is not anti-technology. It is, however, profoundly anti-hubris. It calls us to approach our work with humility, recognizing that we are finite creatures serving an infinite God. Our work should be done for His glory, not ours.
