This week, both The Verge and TechCrunch reported that Twitch quietly rolled out a new setting. Buried in the user dashboard is a toggle that allows streamers to prevent their video streams and chat data from being used to train the generative AI models being built by its parent company, Amazon .
Here’s the catch: the feature is on by default . Every creator on the platform is automatically opted in to having their content used. To protect their work, they have to know the setting exists, find it, and manually turn it off. This 'ask for forgiveness, not permission' approach to data collection has become standard practice, but that doesn't make it right.
