The growing discipleship gap
When a technology as transformative as AI enters the world, the Church has a choice: engage it with biblical wisdom or ignore it and hope it goes away. History shows us the latter never works. When the printing press arrived, the Church eventually harnessed it to put Scripture into the hands of millions. When the internet became ubiquitous, ministries learned to use it for global missions.

They see it as a potential idol—a tool that promises wisdom and efficiency apart from God. And frankly, they are already overworked. They didn't sign up to become IT directors or AI ethicists.
These concerns are not just valid; they are vital. We must be wary of any tool that could distort the Gospel or diminish the primacy of Scripture, prayer, and the local church. But caution cannot lead to abdication.
Wisdom is the principal thing
Ignoring AI won't stop your church members from using it. It will only stop them from being discipled in how they use it. The solution isn't to fear the tool, but to lead our people in stewarding it with biblical discernment. Scripture is clear on our responsibility here:

Start the Conversation. You might be surprised how many people in your pews are already using AI. Ask them. Bring it up in a small group, a men's breakfast, or a leadership meeting. Ask how they use it at work, what questions they have, and what worries them. Simply opening the conversation signals that the church is a safe place to process these real-world issues.
Model Discernment from the Pulpit. Weave the topic of technology into your preaching. Talk about how our identity in Christ, not our productivity, defines our worth. Discuss how truth comes from Scripture, not a large language model. Apply biblical ethics to questions of AI bias, job displacement, and digital identity. This isn't about giving a tech lecture; it's about applying God's unchanging Word to our rapidly changing world.
Equip, Don't Just Warn. Instead of only warning about the dangers, provide resources and frameworks for wise use. Point people to articles, books, and ministries that are thinking biblically about these things. The goal is to move from a posture of fear to one of faithful innovation, fostering a culture of cultivating digital wisdom in the church .
