I lost someone I loved and prayer feels empty. I do not know what to say to God.

I am sorry. You do not have to sound composed for God to hear you. The Psalms — which is the Bible's own prayer book — are full of prayers that begin with Where are You and How long. Lament is grief spoken toward God rather than away from Him. That is not a failure of faith. That is what faith does when it is honest.
Write a prayer I can pray tonight. Short is better. I cannot handle much.

Tonight's prayer can be as small as one sentence, and God hears small prayers:

Lord, I AM here. I am hurting. Stay near.

You do not have to perform composed Faith for God to hear you. He is near to the brokenhearted — not near to the theologically articulate or the emotionally steady, but near to the brokenhearted. That is the promise you are standing on tonight.

Psalm 34:18

KJV
18The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Save this as a note, and maybe make a reminder image from the Psalm.

I saved the prayer shape so you can return to it tonight and on any night this week when words are thin. The Psalm is there as something to hold onto — something truer and more durable than the feeling that prayer is empty. Some nights you do not need a long prayer. You need a true one, and you have one.
Find more verses about God being near. I need something more solid than just people saying time heals.

Time may soften some edges, but Scripture gives you something sturdier than time: the nearness of God.

Look for three kinds of nearness:

God near to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18 does not say God is near to people who can explain their pain neatly. It says He is near to the brokenhearted.

Christ near as the Man of Sorrows. Isaiah 53:3 calls Him acquainted with grief. That means your sorrow is not foreign country to Jesus.

The Spirit near when prayer collapses. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps us in weakness when we do not know what to pray. That is not a second-class prayer life. That is God helping the speechless.

So when someone says, Time heals, you can quietly answer yourself: God is near now. Healing may take time, but I AM not abandoned while time passes.
